We worked with Morgan Studio on two major projects at our property. We worked extensively with the lead architect, the Yale University-educated Elizabeth Morgan, and we do not hesitate to recommend her wholeheartedly.

When we bought our property it was essentially just a garage with a small apartment on top, set on a beautiful piece of land just outside the center of one of the Berkshires' best-loved villages. It was our goal to turn it into a welcoming home that was in tune with its New England surroundings and our (mostly modern) aesthetics.

In the first phase of the project, we expanded the existing property and renovated it entirely. We added a new living room with a wall of enormous windows looking out over the Berkshires, and renovated the garage into a new kitchen and dining area. Two bathrooms and two of three bedrooms were completely gutted. A new screen porch was built. In the second stage of the project, we built a new carriage house with an office area/bedroom above the garage. Ms. Morgan guided us on every stage of both projects, from the concepts and design, to the plans, to the selection of a contractor. She then managed the contractor and budget throughout the construction process.

In both stages of the project we particularly appreciated several aspects of Ms. Morgan’s background, skill set and working style:

- While she worked hard to understand our goals and taste, she also did not hesitate to offer us frank advice, even when this was contrary to our initial expectations. For example, she suggested that the exterior roof line of the addition match the angles of the existing structure, but that we ‘drop’ the interior ceiling. While we wanted a big great ‘great room’, she explained that many ‘great rooms’ that are fully double height don’t always feel as cozy as their owners think they will, and that in particular we may feel more comfortable in a more human space. We followed her advice, and are very happy with the result.

- She is very in tune with currents of modern design but also understands and celebrates the New England context in which she works (and which she’s from, she is a native of Williamstown, Mass.) Much of the design process—both the architecture evolution as well as the fittings and furnishings (she also did a lot of the decorating, and we would recommend her for that as well)—involved her describing to us how she suggested we balance the old and the new, with combinations of elements, for example, like traditional wainscoting paired ultra-modern counter-tops. We love the final result and were not surprised when our home was extensively photographed for a spread in Berkshire Magazine.

I would like to give my highest recommendation for Elizabeth Morgan as architect and owner of Morgan Studio Architecture & Interiors.

I first met Elizabeth in 2009, when she served as Project Architect (while with Kuhn Riddle Architects) for the George N. Parks Minuteman Marching Band project, a new 15,000 SF building attached to a historic smaller structure.    I was impressed by her expertise and professionalism in designing and documenting a sensitive and sustainable project for the University.  She has the critical ability to integrate the flood of information involved in the process of a project – from programming needs to mechanical systems – while also deftly managing the large cast of contributors – from end-users to engineers – required to design an efficient, economical and programmatically successful building.  And she does so while both maintaining her professional demeanor while contributing to a fulfilling and uplifting process.

Once construction began, Elizabeth further deepened her impression by proving to be one of the best all-round Architect Construction Administrators we have had on the campus.  She knew every aspect of the project intimately and was able to quickly and precisely answer questions and provide clarification for questions related to construction that kept the process moving forward and – most importantly – the whole team working together on solutions until the building was occupied.  She was responsive and flexible, which is crucial when dealing with a bureaucracy such as UMASS, with its myriad standards and processes.

Elizabeth is intelligent, skillful, organized and trustworthy.  I recommend her highly, without hesitation, and look forward to working with her again in the future.

Elizabeth Morgan didn’t just design our recreation pavilion, she added her passion. The difference between basic design and adding a little of your soul is palpable.
